چکیده

Exponential growth of video traffic challenges the current paradigm to stream large amounts of video contents to end users. Cloud computing with elastic resource allocation supported enables cost-effective video streaming with desired QoE requirements. We abstract a new theoretical model from real systems for elastic media streaming by introducing a virtual content service provider that rents cloud resources from cloud service providers with multiple purchase pricing options and provides streaming service to end users. The major objective of the virtual content service provider is to reduce monetary cost with good user QoE. The responsibilities of this role are to resolve two problems under real cloud environments: resource provisioning and acquisition. In this new model, more comprehensive formulation of virtual machine provisioning problem is considered by incorporating with dynamic resource provisioning and resource acquiring with real monetary cost under multiple pricing models. We formulate the virtual machine provisioning problem into a constrained stochastic optimization problem, and design an online algorithm which can obtain approximately optimal solution with explicitly provable performance upper bounds through applying Lyapunov optimization framework. Results from extensive trace-driven simulation experiments demonstrate that our proposed OPT-ORS algorithm can well balance the monetary cost and user QoE. We also find that reserved VM instances are utilized fully to satisfy baseline user demand, ondemand instances are always rent only when flash-crowd user demand happens, and spot instances are rent more frequently than on-demand instances to serve user demand over the baseline due to low prices.

On the Cost-QoE Tradeoff for Cloud-Based Video Streaming Under Amazon EC2's Pricing Models

The emergence of cloud computing provides a costeffective approach to deliver video streams to a large number of end users with the desired user quality-of-experience (QoE). Under such a paradigm, a video service provider (VSP) can launch its own video streaming services virtually, by renting the distribution infrastructure from one or more cloud service providers (CSPs). However, CSPs like Ama...

Efficient Schemes for Resource Allocation In the Cloud for Media Streaming Applications

A large number of users in the Internet have recently attracted by the media streaming applications. Due to advent of this bandwidth-intensive applications, with guaranteed QoS relying only on central resources at a media content provider it is economically inefficient to provide streaming distribution. media content providers(e.g., Video on Demand (VoD) providers) can use to obtain streaming r...

An economic and energy-aware analysis of the viability of outsourcing cluster computing to a cloud

This paper compares the total cost of ownership of a physical cluster with the cost of a virtual Cloud-based cluster. For that purpose, cost models for both the physical cluster and the cluster on the Cloud have been developed. The model for the physical cluster takes into account previous works and incorporates a more detailed study of the costs related to energy consumption and the usage of e...

Strategy-proof Resource Pricing in Federated Systems

Resource sharing on the Internet is becoming increasingly pervasive. Recently, there is growing interest in federated systems where globally distributed and commoditized resources are traded, such as in peer-to-peer computing, grids, and cloud computing. An important issue in the allocation of shared resources in the context of large federated systems, such as federated clouds, is that users ar...

Navigating the Public Cloud Labyrinth: A Study of Price, Capacity, and Scaling Granularity Trade-offs

Public clouds offer numerous virtual machine (VM) types with complex trade-offs that tenants must navigate for cost-effective resource procurement. We identify three key qualitative axes using which these trade-offs can be succinctly expressed: price dynamism, offered capacity dynamism, and granularity of resource scaling. We offer several examples of contemporary VM offerings and where they fi...
